There's something about Leicester...

I came to Leicester to study for my Master's and have been living in and around ever since (that's almost 6 years!). Not exactly the most glamorous place on earth, not exactly the place I would chose if I could go anywhere, but sometimes in life you have to make compromises and unfortunately often that depends on the day-job requirements.

But if you look a little closer, it has a lot going for it. It has some incredible architecture, a beautiful train station (currently in redevelopment), some lovely parks, and if you look that little bit closer again, quite a few really lovely bars and shops!

So here are my favourite bits...

New Walk...

I will admit and maybe make many readers very jealous, but this is where I live - and it is the absolute best part of Leicester! Fair enough I live in a flat on the side of New Walk rather than a huge Victorian house, but to me it doesn't matter!

New Walk is a solely pedestrian way/path (even bikes are not allowed), now a Conservation Area, which links the town centre to Victoria Park where Leicester university is. It is lined with trees and rather large, very well looked after houses, with a few parks, the New Walk museum, and in general very content-looking people walking on it. There is nothing more relaxing that to walk up and down New Walk and forget that you are in the middle of a city.

... leading on to Queen's Road and Clarendon Park

and this is where I used to live... (yes I know, I am very lucky in that way)

A quiet little area, just beyond Victoria Park, and has so many great delis, charity shops and bar, and the feel of a very small and tight community. If you haven't been there yet, I would highly recommend it!

The Criterion

From the outside, it doesn't look like much, and from the inside, it looks a bit odd. BUT, it does have  an impressive amount of real ales, quizzes, darts, etc (for the drinkers) and the yummiest stone-baked pizzas at ridiculously low prices (for the foodies like me!)

Their website is here

Phoenix Square

Leicester's independent cinema, with lots of amazing films, really good homemade food and great people.

I must admit since they moved to the Cultural Quarter, I have become a complete addict, so much so that I don't remember when was the last time I went to a large cinema like the Odeon. Plus the seats are so much comfier - an absolute joy!

Manhattan 34

Very near the Curve, this opened in September last year and has become my  hide-out place, I absolutely adore this bar! Cocktails, bagels and jazz - what else could I possibly need?!

Website and menus over here

Mrs Bridges

Over on Lowesby Lane, this is the cutest tea rooms with the loveliest afternoon tea.
If you can sit outside, it's even better! Absolute delight!

Summer Sundae Weekender

Maybe not as big and well renowned as T in the Park or V festival, but this is a small festival which is really worth going to. It is  family-friendly with activities, and is set in the beautiful Victoria Park.
The Maccabees were headlining last year and I discovered the oh so amazing Portico Quartet.

Vintage shops and fairs

Not that I am myself a fan of all things vintage (they always look stunning, but never quite right on me!), Leicester has an unconditional love for it, or so it seems. It is probably due to it having two universities and plenty of young people about... but nonetheless, if you are looking for vintage and alternative clothing and general items, Leicester is a pretty good please to be!

There a vintage fair at Market Square ever last Saturday of the month, which seems to be ever so popular, and there is also a fair which takes place inside the Cathedral a few times a year, which is always great too. On top of that, there are quite a few vintage shops such as the great DollyMix Vintage and the famous Dolly Anna Does (well to me she is famous!).

I'd love to hear about little gems you know about Leicester...if you feel like spreading the word!

**What are you doing on Sunday?**

If you are in Leicester this coming weekend, don't forget to come to the

Clarendon Park Summer Fair on Queen's Road on Sunday from 11am to 5pm.

This is third fair now and they have all been ever so popular. It is so lovely to meet everybody who lives around, meet local talents, try some amazing food and realise how creative this little 'hidden' area of Leicester is!

Most importantly of course, *Paris in a bottle* will have a stand there; don't forget to come and say hi and treat yourself to some fabulous jewellery! :)

Every pair of shoes tells a story...

We all have things, items, memorabilia, photos that remind us of specific moments in our lives.
For me, it seems that shoes are like an open diary... they all tell a story.

My Dubai shoes

I bought these shoes when I was visiting my half sister who lives in Dubai. It was love at first sight with these super cute and surprisingly comfortable pair of heels. I will admit that I am not somebody who can wear high heels - I simply do not know how to walk with them. I am getting better, but these are still one of my highest pair, shame on me...

My I-am-feeling-a-bit-low-shoes

I bought these shoes a couple of months ago, when I was starting to feel a bit low. I saw them and loved them straight away. Perfect to add some colour to an outfit and to get noticed.

My Paris shoes

Every girl must own a pair of shoes that reminds her of a Parisian adventure. So here we are, a pair of shoes that are simple and oh so chic bout last year when taking a few days off in Paris with a friend - bliss!

My I-need-comfortable-shoes-to-wear-to-go-to-work shoes

As much as I love a pretty pair of shoes, I also love when my feet don't hurt all day, so when it comes to walking to the bus stop and back (about a mile each way), I am not one to wear my 'day' shoes. Instead I wear comfy shoes and change into my pretty but less comfy pair once arrived at the office.
As much as I hated it, I did wear a pair of trainers for a few days - simply because I had nothing else really comfortable. We all know that trainers are  super-ugly, never to be worn unless you are training for a marathon. Mine were also super-uncomfortable... it seems that however I tried and positioned my feet, they hurt really quickly. Maybe they are simply telling me that sport is not my thing - suits me!
Every time I stepped in the office with my white trainers though, I could see all eyes staring, and me feeling ashamed. So I went to Clarks, home to comfort, and bought myself a nice enough pair of walking shoes to be seen in, comfortable and almost fashionable. I am now a happy bunny, all the way to and from work.

My I-am-moving shoes

A treat I bought as I knew I would be moving. I am proud to say that I kept them in their box until I had actually moved, and now they make me feel home and add sparkles to my day.

My I-passed-my-driving-test shoes

Completely on a limb, I bought these shoes in about two minutes, which is extremely rare for me. But I was in such a good mood, I had just passed my driving test, and there is nothing better than to treat oneself on such an occasion!

My I-am-attending-a-wedding shoes

I found those in a charity shop would you believe and they were brand new. I have to admit that the heel was way too high for me, so I had had to shorten it slightly.
I wore them with pride at one of my friends' wedding back end of April.

My *Paris in a bottle* shoes

I had been eying up these shoes for a few weeks, and so decided to treat myself to congratulate me on having set up *Paris in a bottle* and launching my website  just a few months earlier.

So here are my stories of shoes. None of them are designer shoes, but to me they all tell a story,  remind me of a specific time or an emotion, and that is priceless.

What are your shoe-stories?

Decadent chocolate dessert

We all need to treat ourselves sometimes, and though we might be jewellery
or shoes-addict, nothing will ever beat a really yummy piece of chocolate.
And here I have the best recipe ever for a super easy, super delicious
no-cook chocolate tart!

I will admit that it is no exactly my own recipe, I found it on the BBC Good Food website, however it has become my signature dessert, which I regularly bribe my friends with when I need help!

I won't lie, it is a really rich desert, but I promise that even a small bite will
fulfill any chocolate craving you may have!

The recipe says that it is for 8 people, but I think that it can serve more people than that. I recommend serving it in very small squares - that way you won't feel bad about having seconds!

Ingredients

200g pack all-butter biscuits
(I use hbnobs, and I usually put the whole packet which is 300gr)
100g butter
1tbsp golden syrup or honey
100g bar dark chocolate
100g bar milk chocolate
1 tsp vanilla extract (or bourbon for a kick, I'll leave you to experiment!)
2 tbsp icing sugar
200ml whipping cream

Recipe

  1. Crush the biscuits by putting them in a large, strong, plastic food bag and bashing with a rolling pin. Melt the butter with the syrup or honey in the microwave, then stir in the biscuits. Press onto the base and up the sides of a 12 x 36cm rectangular tin (or 23-25cm round flan tin) and chill while you make the filling.
  2. Break up the two chocolate bars and put in a large bowl. Melt in the microwave for 2-3 mins on Medium, stirring halfway through. Stir in the vanilla extract, then sift in the icing sugar. Whip the cream until it just holds its shape, then fold into the melted chocolate. Pour into the prepared tin and smooth the top. Chill for at least 2 hrs or for up to 2 days.

  3. Just before serving, remove the tart from the tin and slide it onto a flat plate (loosen edges first with the tip of a small pointed knife). You will find it easier to remove the tart if you leave it at room temperature for 30 mins. Put a few tsps of crème fraîche along the centre of the tart (or around the edges if the tart is circular) and top each with a raspberry, then dust lightly with icing sugar. Cut into thin slices and serve with extra raspberries on the side.

You can find the recipe on the BBC Good Food website here.

Bon appétit! :)

Welcome back (giveaway inside!)

Yes I know, I have neglected you for a little while now...
Being too busy should never ever be an excuse to neglect you,
but unfortunately too much has happened in my private life in the last few months
that I simply had to take a little break from it all.

However, as Noah and the Whale sings it so well:
"Like a cut-down tree, I will rise again

Or so I hope anyway.

So here I am, back on track, with my jewellery and my lovelies.

And to make sure you forgive me 100%, I thought best to welcome you back with
